Trade union membership is strong in Norway. More than half of all
employed people are members of a trade union. Among those working in fields
covered by Unio, more than 90 per cent are unionised.
Unio is Norway's second largest confederation of professional unions
for employees, with 300,000 members. Unio represents ten individual unions.
Members have a university or college education. Most members work in the public
sector. Anders Folkestad is Unio's president.

Anders Folkestad.
Unio works to ensure that education, knowledge, research and
competence achieve a higher status in the labour market and society at large.
Its main aim is to secure good employment terms and conditions for its members.
Unio wishes to protect and enhance the welfare state. Research and
education are keys to development and innovation.
Unio is one of the key players in the collaboration between government,
business and employee organisations at national level in Norway.
Unio’s member unions:
Utdanningsforbundet (Union of Education Norway)
Norsk Sykepleierforbund
(Norwegian Nurses Organisation)
Forskerforbundet (Norwegian Association of Researchers)
Politiets Fellesforbund
(Norwegian Police Federation)
Norsk Fysioterapeutforbund (Norwegian Physiotherapist
Association)
Norsk
Ergoterapeutforbund (Norwegian Occupational Therapy Association)
Akademikerforbundet (Union of University and College
Graduates)
Presteforeningen
(Norwegian Association of Clergy)
Skatterevisorenes Forening (Norwegian Association of Tax
Auditors and Accountants)
Det Norske Diakonforbund (Norwegian Association of Deacons)
Unio’s member unions are professional associations that work
both for professional development and for the improvement of their
members’ employment terms and conditions, in the same way as a
traditional trade union.
Unio plays an active role in shaping labour and employment policy, and
is engaged in a broad range of social issues. Unio is a driving force behind
the effort to ensure that the largest possible proportion of the population is
employed, and that the labour market is adapted to enable inclusion and
equality.
Unio is engaged in international issues because our members’
interests are affected by international processes in the EU and ILO, for
example. Norway is not a member of the EU, but is part of the single market
through the European Economic Agreement (EEA).
Unio is keen to strengthen international solidarity and cooperation
with labour organisations in other countries. Unio is a member of several
international organisations and works within the ILO.
